Compliments & Praise
Have you ever received a compliment and didn’t quite know how to respond? Or maybe you deflected the compliment and gave the praise to another source? It’s a common reaction for adults. Perhaps you feel embarrassed by the attention being focused on you, or you may not feel worthy about the praise that you are receiving from someone else.
Many times, when grownups receive praise or a compliment, they tend to utilize the child-like phrase’s concept of “I’m rubber and you’re glue. Whatever is said to me bounces off and sticks to you”. However, whether we want to admit it or not, we all want to be recognized for something we worked on and, for a job well done. For the women out there, we may spend the time getting ready for an outing because it makes us feel good to look presentable, but it is always nice when someone compliments an outfit we are wearing or admires the way we styled our hair that day. For men, it might be more of a comment from a friend during a game of golf who says, “Nice back swing!”. Either way, it’s nice to have someone notice something we accomplished in some way.
