Why Our Teaching Techniques Matter

Have you ever felt frustrated when trying to teach a fellow co-worker a new task and they can’t seem to grasp the concept? Or, for many of the parents out there, have you had a child that constantly “challenges” you, or always must do things “the hard way” to learn what it is that you’re trying to teach them? As the video shows us, you are not alone in the matter. There are a lot of teachers, instructors, and parents that have been dealing with this for years, and yes, it is frustrating.

It may not be what we are trying to teach, but how the person perceives the instruction that is making things difficult. For many children, especially young ones, what is said to them is taken very literally. For example, if you tell a child to get everything off the floor in their room, they might place everything on their bed, or if you tell them to clear their plate at dinner, they might walk over to the trash can and empty it in the can. This would be a shock or at least a surprise to the parent(s) who has spent time, money, and effort preparing the meal. What we want is to focus on the goal we aim to accomplish. How can that goal be met and what do we need to do to get our point across effectively?…
